Flores

Flores, located in the westernmost part of the Azores archipelago, is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and boasts stunning landscapes that are a true haven for nature lovers. With an area of 54.7 square miles, divided into two municipalities, Santa Cruz and Lajes, Flores is a must-visit destination in the Azores.

Discovered in the mid-1400s by navigator Diogo de Teive, Flores was originally called the island of São Tomás or Santa Iria before being renamed for its abundance of goldenrod flowers covering the island. Characterized by a rugged coastline and an abundance of waterfalls, lakes, streams, and wells, Flores is a treasure trove of natural beauty.

Despite its small size, Flores is a great place to explore by boat, offering breathtaking views of its rock structures and caves, including the Santa Cruz das Flores Arch, the islet of Maria Vaz, and the Enxaréus and Galo caves.
